About AI Background Remover
AI Background Remover uses the @imgly/background-removal machine-learning model to detect and remove the background from photos entirely within your browser. The AI model is downloaded once from a CDN and then runs locally — no pixel of your image is sent to any server.
The tool outputs a transparent-background PNG that you can place over any colour, use in presentations, drop into e-commerce listings, or combine with other graphics. The before/after drag slider lets you compare the original and the cutout side-by-side.
Best results: photos where the subject stands out clearly from the background — people, pets, products, and vehicles on plain or contrasting backgrounds. Very complex or camouflage-style images may require manual touch-up in a photo editor.

No. The entire process runs inside your browser tab. The AI model weights are downloaded from jsDelivr (a public CDN) once and cached by the browser, but your actual image data never leaves your device. You can verify this by opening DevTools → Network tab and confirming that no image file is uploaded after you click "Remove Background".
Processing time depends on your device's CPU or GPU and the image resolution. A typical portrait photo (1–3 MP) on a modern computer takes 5–20 seconds. The first run also includes a one-time model download (around 40 MB) which may take a minute on slow connections; subsequent uses in the same browser session are faster because the model is cached.
You can upload JPEG, PNG, or WebP images up to 20 MB. The output is always a PNG with a transparent background (alpha channel), because JPEG does not support transparency. This PNG is ideal for use in design tools, presentations, e-commerce product listings, and anywhere a transparent cutout is needed.
The AI works best when there is clear contrast between the main subject and the background — people against a plain wall, products on a solid-colour surface, pets in a garden, or vehicles in a parking lot. Complex scenes, cluttered backgrounds, or subjects that blend into the background (e.g. a white shirt on a white wall) may produce incomplete cutouts. In those cases, try a photo with better lighting and background contrast.
Model loading requires a network connection to download the AI weights (~40 MB) from the jsDelivr CDN on first use. If you see a loading error, check your internet connection and try again using the Retry button. The model is then cached by your browser, so offline use works after the first successful load. If errors persist, try a different browser (Chrome or Edge recommended for best WebAssembly performance).
The background removal tool itself is free to use for personal and commercial purposes with no watermark. The AI model is provided by IMG.LY under its own open-source license. You are responsible for ensuring you have the rights to the images you process.
