What is SHA?

SHA (Secure Hash Algorithm) is a family of cryptographic hash functions designed by the NSA. They are widely used for data integrity verification and digital signatures.

SHA Variants:
  • SHA-1: 160-bit hash. Now considered weak due to collision vulnerabilities. Not recommended for security.
  • SHA-256: 256-bit hash. Part of SHA-2 family. Widely used and secure for most applications.
  • SHA-512: 512-bit hash. Part of SHA-2 family. More secure, used for high-security applications.
  • SHA-3: Latest standard (2015). Different internal structure from SHA-2. Alternative to SHA-256.
Common Use Cases:
  • File integrity verification (checksums)
  • Digital signatures and certificates
  • Blockchain and cryptocurrency
  • Git commit hashing
  • Password storage (with salt)
